While Hyundai Motor Company, which has its headquarters in Seoul, South Korea, was not created until 1967, the idea of the company goes back to 1947. This is when the founder, Chung Ju-Yung, incorporated the company. He did so in order to help with reconstruction following World War II.
However, in 1950, Korea became involved in another war, so Ju-Yung was unable to make forward progress. Finally, in 1968 the first Hyundai car was made. In 1975, the Hyundai Pony became Hyundai's first mass-produced vehicle. In 1985, the Pony became a top-seller in Canada and in 1986, the company was able to sell cars in the United States.

In 1998, Hyundai was becoming widely known around the world for selling reliable vehicles. Because of the reputation of the company, Hyundai vehicles became increasingly popular in the United States.
In 2002, Hyundai made the decision to build its first U.S. plant in Montgomery, Alabama. Production at the facility began three years later in 2005. That same year, Hyundai sold just over 455,000 vehicles in the United States. That number climbed to an all-time high in 2016 with 768,057 vehicle sales.
